With Valentine’s Day right around the corner my Pinterest and Facebook page have been flooded with all these amazingly cute Valentine’s Day craft ideas. Whether it be unique ways to decorate, different snack ideas, or the oh so infamous school valentines for our kids classmates and teachers.
This year one of my sons came home with a letter from their teacher saying “homemade valentines encouraged” and I’ll be honest friends, my heart sank a little and I immediately felt even more tired than I did 30 seconds prior. Now don’t get me wrong. The sentiment behind this idea is all sorts of lovely. It gives the kids time to be creative, in theory I suppose it would be cheaper.
But folks, it’s just not me.
I mean it could be me, if there were two or three of me. But there’s not. There’s just one.
And the reality in this house is, I would be the one plugging away at homemade Valentine’s Day cards at midnight the night before they were due. And not because my kids weren’t capable. They are perfectly capable. But my one son is a perfectionist and he would spend an hour on each Valentine and when you have to make 20 of them, that’s just not going to cut it. And my other son, well, let’s just say “crafting” really isn’t his thing. Getting him to write his name and his classmates name on a card was going to be a challenge in and of itself.
And if I were being perfectly honest, simple homemade Valentine’s Day cards without anything extra just wouldn’t feel like enough. I know that’s my issue, and I completely own it. But now-a-days it’s very rare to receive just a card. There are all these amazingly crafty mommy’s out there turning suckers and jello cups into sweet Valentine’s Day butterflies. And there are other mommas out there making homemade chocolates to gift each child in class. So yes, I admit I feel the pressure of doing something extra. So when I can find a box of Valentine’s Day cards with a pencil for each child, or a box of cards with awesome stickers from my kids favorite movie, then man, spending that $4 at target sounds pretty stinkin amazing. So that’s what I did.

And I am happy and not completely exhausted. Priceless.
So this Valentine’s Day, no matter if you are an out of the box kind of momma or if you are an amazing crafty momma that has a lot more energy and wit than me, I hope you all enjoy that time with your little ones sitting there eagerly waiting to help. Because I have to say, this year, without all the extra stress of doing something fancy, my little men and I had so much fun putting our boxed Valentine’s together. And that friends, is what matters most. ❤️
