Each year my kids and I make Christmas Ornaments, and I am always sure to mark the year in which it was made. I try to pick something new and different each year for them to make their ornaments out of (ex. felt, wood, dough ect.), but this year we are going a little bit more of the traditional route. We took a simple clear ornament and turned it into a Christmas time capsule of sorts.
Here’s what we did:
1.We took a clear ornament (I ordered these from Amazon, and they are plastic actually, so they are super safe for the kids to be handling).
2. I let the kids paint whatever they wanted on their ornament, because I wanted it to reflect who they were at this point of time, and what they enjoyed about Christmas. All my kids painted very different things. One of my son’s painted a snowman, while the other painted a Christmas tree, and my daughter painted the entire thing purple with lots of glitter. They all took a lot of time and detail in their design and had a ton of fun doing it. Here’s how one of them turned out:
3. Next I wrote on top of a piece of paper (that I had them cut so that it would fit properly inside of the ornament)..And the theme the kids picked was “Something Special about Christmas Time”, other ideas we thought of were their Christmas wish list, or favorite thing about Christmas.
4. I then had the kids brainstorm what they wanted to write on their paper, it was pretty neat to hear all the things about Christmas that they were excited about, especially because presents only came up one time! Once they had their ideas, I had them pick what they were most excited about and write it on the paper (My daughter is only two so she cant write or talk that well, so we just traced her hand and let her color on the paper.)
(Putting up the Christmas Tree with my family)
5. Once the kids finished writing, we rolled up the paper like this:
6. We then placed the paper inside of the ornament that they painted. I now have an ornament with their little hand writing on it, and with something that was special to them in 2015. To me, this is priceless. I am sure they will enjoy looking at them in the years to come as well. We figured that each year we can add something to the ornament. Some years it might be another piece of paper, other years it may be something more like sand from a beach we visit, or a small token from a vacation we took that year.. anything to remind us of the passing by years.
This is what it looked like when it was finished:
Hope you enjoy making your own Time Capsule Ornament this year too!

This is such a beautiful activity to do with my kids- easy enough for even my youngest to do, but also a lasting keepsake. I’m all about tradition at Christmas, so I’m definitely trying this one!

I love this idea! In the past few years I have been making these for wedding shower gifts. I fill the ball with the wedding ornament, which I cut up into thin strips and curl by rolling on a pencil.
