When people look at my mom they see beauty. I can confidently say that every single one of my friends growing up made a comment about how beautiful my mom was at one time or another. I remember her going on my 6th grade fossil field trip with me and the boys fighting over who was going to sit closest to her on the bus, and I sat there wondering why the boys never made that much of a fuss over me.
I looked up at her that day and I think for the first time saw what “the world” saw when they looked at my mom.. blonde beautiful hair, gorgeous hazel eyes, slender build and the most perfect smile. Up until that moment I guess I had never really paid attention to how beautiful my mom really was. To me, if I had to describe her hair before that day it would have been soft, and always smelled good… because that’s what I always felt when she hugged me. Her eyes were mostly kind, but when she was angry or upset you could see it in her eyes first. Her body was the perfect size to wrap my arms around and her smile was what let me know everything was going to be okay. But after that field trip I started to notice how others didn’t see that when they saw my mom… They just got lost in her beauty.
Here it is almost 20 years later and people still make comments to me about how beautiful my mom is. I usually just smile and shake my head in agreement… because she is in fact beautiful. But there are so many times I want to say, but she is much more. Now as a mom myself I see so much more in her then I think she even sees in herself. She is so unbelievably smart. She truly missed her calling as a nurse or doctor. She is able to diagnose us all (kids, grand kids, husbands, grandparents) with any health problems we have ever had. She has this crazy ability to know what is wrong with us way before doctors even do. And no, not thanks to Dr. Google… this has gone back long before google was a thing… or computers for that matter. I remember her having these medical books she would sit and read through to figure out what was wrong with us, and you know what? 99% off the time, shes was right. Not many people know that about her. So many people see a blonde that gets certain quotes wrong and who can laugh at herself so they naturally assume.. Ditzy… free spirit..
I mean how can someone who is that beautiful be that smart?
But truly she is… with a flair of ditzy just to keep things interesting 😉
She is also strong, kind, protective and loving… Every time she put her hand acrossed my body to act as a human seat belt in the car when she had to stop fast, she showed me she would protect me, even if it meant sacrificing herself. In fact I am pretty sure she just did this not too long ago, even though I am now bigger than her.
My mom is also known for asking a thousand questions which has driven all of us four kids insane at one point or another. But as my children get older and the more questions I hear myself ask them, the more I understand why my mom always asked us all those questions throughout the years. She cared enough to ask. She wanted to know about our lives, she wanted to protect us when she could and prepare us for when she couldn’t. Every question she asked served a purpose, and they still do til this day. I am so thankful to have a mom who has always loved us enough to ask.
This week, I am so happy to celebrate a woman who I love dearly and who I am very blessed to call my mom. To this day she is still the first person I call when I am happy, upset or need advice, and I am sure she always will be. I love you Mom!!! ♥♥
